Benefits & Limitations of Laptops

Users often ask whether they should choose a laptop or a desktop. The answer is, it really depends on IT practices and the day-to-day responsibilities of users. Laptop are more expensive, so we want to make sure that users who request a laptop make good use of it. For example, if you are someone who need to travel, whether on campus or traveling off campus, a laptop is a good option for you. For example, professors, vice-presidents, principals, or anyone who attends many meetings where they want to access their applications and files or take notes through their computer. In addition, coaches, admissions counselors, and development officers can make good use of a laptop. On the other hand, users who mostly perform their tasks at their desks and rarely travel would benefit more from a desktop with more resources and larger screens.

Benefits:

Unsurprisingly, the main advantage of a laptop is its portability. Those traveling for work or attending regular campus meetings can bring their computers. In addition, our new VPN (Virtual Private Network) system will now allow you to connect your Cornell laptop directly to our network from anywhere with a reliable Internet connection as if you were in your office. You will no longer have to leave your desktop computer on to be able to access it remotely from home. One thing to remember about VPN service, your VPN experience is directly related to the speed of your home internet connection. The faster the connection at home, the better the experience.

Limits:

While the advantage of mobility is very important and in many cases eliminates the disadvantages associated with a laptop, it is important to recognize the disadvantages:

Laptops generally have smaller screens and keyboards than desktops

Due to the cost, docking stations are not provided.

Laptops generally have lower capacities than desktops for the same relative cost. This fluctuates depending on the funds available for the annual update process.

Smaller, slower hard drive

Slower processors

Less memory (RAM)

Repairs are more difficult and will require at least 48 hours of response time if the machine needs to be sent to a repair center.

Temporary replacement laptops come with standard productivity software and cannot be reloaded with employee-specific software. Employees requesting laptop recognize inherent risk

Laptops are more difficult, if not impossible, to upgrade (memory, etc.)

Laptops are inherently more vulnerable to damage and theft

Laptops may require more technical skills to operate than desktops

Power management issues
